Tips for Grieving through the Holidays by David Kessler

1.      Give yourself permission to cancel the holidays

2.      Be honest about your grief

3.      Include the loss in the holidays (i.e. with candles, food, prayer, stories, etc.)

4.      Re-evaluate your rituals (Live with “it’ll do” for Christmas)

5.      Pay attention to the children (i.e. model appropriate grieving for them)

6.      Don’t be surprised at what triggers you

7.      Remember, they don’t understand your grief

8.      At events have a planned exit strategy

9.      Remember “No.” is a complete sentence

10.  Don’t forget pets. If you love is real, your grief is real

11.  Take your grief “on-line”

12.  Remember: You can have grief bursts and love bursts
