Spiritual Renewal & Crisis Care

Clergy In Kairos

The Pastoral Institute’s Clergy in Kairos program has been an oasis of refreshment and spiritual renewal for clergy for over two decades. We offer a personalized week that includes a mini-sabbatical of therapy, spiritual direction, vocational assessment and stress and wellness assessment. The week also includes a variety of avenues for personal restoration, to include therapeutic massage, if desired.

The word kairos refers to the opportune moment in which transformation occurs. Clergy and clergy couples choose the Clergy in Kairos week for many reasons, including:

  • stress and burnout,
  • vocational discernment,
  • an intensive growth-oriented pastoral-theological “tune-up” as part of a larger sabbatical,
  • refreshment, evaluation, and re-invigoration of on-going ministry,
  • mandated referrals by their Bishops or judicatory officers in order to address specific concerns or chronic conflict among pastoral staff.

Clergy in Kairos has been reviewed for its effectiveness and the published findings are available here.

Please note: A summary evaluative report used for discernment and decision-making regarding the potential for future ministry may be requested for an additional fee.

Schedule for the Week

Typically, the week begins on Monday morning with the completion of required paperwork and assessments. Some assessments are completed online prior to arrival. The clergy is paired with two pastoral counselors for the week and sees both each day. A third ministry coach spends two hours during the week reviewing with the participant the results of the online assessments as they pertain to leadership and relationships in the church. When clergy couples attend together, a third pastoral counselor or marriage and family therapist works with the couple daily. The week concludes on Friday with a short exit interview, usually by mid-day, to allow for travel back home for the weekend.

Lodging and Attractions

Participants receive complimentary accommodations in an upscale hotel convenient to the Pastoral Institute. This is made possible by local hospitality groups in support of clergy well-being.

A variety of opportunities to walk, bike, raft, and kayak exist along Columbus' RiverWalk that stretches over twenty miles and includes the #1 manmade whitewater rapids course in the world (USA Today). Plus, you can enjoy our art scene and downtown shopping and dining. Click here to explore your options.

Program fees are kept as low as possible because we do not file or accept insurance for Clergy in Kairos. The cost is the responsibility of the participant and/or the judicatory, depending on whatever arrangement is made prior to scheduling the week. Typically, churches and/or denominations cover program costs with the clergy occasionally paying a portion. Hotel accommodations are complimentary. Transportation expenses to and from Columbus and the Pastoral Institute, food and entertainment expenses, therapeutic massage, etc. are in addition to the program costs and are the responsibility of the participant(s).
