Counseling & Therapy Approaches

At the Pastoral Institute, we understand that every person’s needs, experiences, and goals are different. Our clinicians draw from a wide range of evidence-informed therapeutic approaches to provide care tailored to each client.

You do not need to know which type of therapy is right for you before scheduling an appointment. During your initial conversations and sessions, your clinician will learn more about your concerns and recommend an approach that fits your individual needs. While you may be interested in a particular therapy, you have read or heard about, another approach, or a combination of approaches, may be more helpful for your situation.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This technique helps clients understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected and develop practical skills for responding to challenges in healthier ways.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Uses skills such as mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and effective communication to help clients manage intense emotions and strengthen relationships.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

A structured therapy designed to help clients process traumatic or distressing experiences and reduce the emotional impact of difficult memories.

  • Play Therapy

Uses play and creative activities to help children express feelings, process experiences, build coping skills, and communicate in ways that feel natural to them.

  • Trauma-Focused Therapy

Provides a safe and supportive approach to helping clients understand, process, and heal from traumatic or deeply distressing experiences.

  • Solution-Focused Therapy

Helps clients identify their strengths, recognize what is already working, and take practical steps toward positive change.

  • Spiritually Integrated Therapy

Thoughtfully incorporates a client’s faith, spiritual beliefs, values, or questions into the counseling process when desired by the client.

  • Humanistic and Existential Therapy

Encourages greater self-awareness and helps clients explore identity, personal values, relationships, meaning, and purpose.

  • Therapeutic Art

Uses creative expression as part of the counseling process to help clients explore emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express through words alone.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy

Explores how past experiences, relationships, and patterns may influence present thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships.

  • Pastoral Counseling

Brings together professional counseling and sensitivity to spiritual concerns, offering care for the emotional, relational, and spiritual dimensions of life.

  • Adult Psychological Testing

Pastoral Institute also offers psychological testing for adults. Testing may help clarify symptoms, identify areas of concern, support diagnosis, and guide recommendations for treatment or additional services.

Not every clinician provides every approach or specialized service. Availability may vary based on the clinician’s training, expertise, and the needs of each client. Our team will help connect you with an appropriate provider and determine the best path forward.

You do not have to choose a therapy before reaching out. We are here to listen, understand your needs, and help you take the next step toward hope, healing, and wholeness.
